QUIVER TREE FOREST

The Quiver tree forest is one of the main attractions of southern Namibia.

This dense stand of about 250 quiver trees, which makes for an unusual “forest”, is on the farm Gariganus, some 14km north east of Keetmanshoop.  The turnoff to theForest is signposted along route 29 (C18 between) Keetmanshoop and Koes.

The branches of these trees were hollowed out by the San for use as quivers for their arrows – hence the names. The quiver tree, a member of the genus Aloe, usually reaches a height of 3-5 m although trees occasionally grow up to 8 m high.  They occur from Namaqualand in  the north-western Cape to the Brandberg and the bright

Yellow flowers are particularly attractive during June and July.
