INTERESTING BUILDINGS IN KEETMANSHOOP

Museum

The old Rhenish Mission Church, now houses the Keetmanshoop Museum.

The church was build in 1895 and remained in use until 1930.  The church was declared a national monument in 1978. The museum is open Monday to Saturday and concentrates on the early history of the Keetmanshoop district and is well worth a visit. The stone church is a fine example of early colonial architecture, with its original corrugated iron roof and bell-tower with weather-vane and inside there is an elegant pulpit and wooden balcony.

Old Post Office

This building was built in 1910 to plans drawn up by the government architect, Gottlieb Redecker.  As a result of a decision to build the post office on a single erf, not two, the plans had to be emended, and because Kaiser Street ran at a slight angle to other streets in the vicinity, the northern wall of the post office was built at an angle too.  The attractive façade incorporates a prominent pointed gable with a wide, rectangular tower where a telegraph mast was once attached.  The building was proclaimed a national monument in 1987 and now serves as offices for the Southern Tourist Forum.
